Key concepts
Planning and Goals
Your strategic plan will define a number of goals for your company over the next few years. Those goals are the first thing you enter into the Plans@Work software, and you'll be reminded often of what they are.
Strategies
It's all very well to have goals, but in order to realise them you need to set concrete strategies. Say your goal is to "To promote a welcoming tunnelball environment", one strategy you may pursue is to create a set of standards that define what "welcoming" actually *is* - in which case, your strategy could be stated as "Draw up minimum standards guidelines for tunnelball facilities, in consultation with the tunnelball community".
Strategies are overseen by appropriate divisions in your organisation – Human Resources, for example, would look after strategies relating to recruitment.
Targets
Targets are measurable indicators of your success, and you'll define several long-term targets for each goal in your strategic plan, broken up into annual figures. In line with your goal to "promote a welcoming tunnelball environment" by 2010, you might aim to have 50% of tunnelball facilities meeting minimum standards by the end of 2008-2009.
Actions
Actions are the tasks that individuals in your organisation are responsible for. Each task contributes to a strategy - division managers set actions (each with a time-frame and a description) for staff members in their area, and those staff members report back on their progress via a system of statuses. Every staff member has his or her own Actions Dashboard, which shows how well they're progressing in each of their tasks.
Reports
The Plans@Work software gives you set of comprehensive reports that cut right across your data, allowing you, your staff and your board to see at a glance how your business is tracking towards the goals you've defined. Of course, privileged information will only be seen by those authorised to do so.
